The settlement was reached earlier this week in Superior Court on behalf of Jill Kwochka of Shelton, for the death of her husband, John Kwochka, said Kwochka's attorney, Tom Ganim of Bridgeport.
"This loss was a true tragedy to all who knew and loved John Kwochka," said Ganim. "He was, by all accounts, an exceptional man. His family is devastated. Noting will bring John back but we hope this brings some justice for the pain the family is enduring."
Amanda Cashmore, 22, of Cheshire, has been charged with negligent homicide for the crash that killed Kwochka, according to state police.
Police reports say Cashmore was driving eastbound on Cheshire Road, also known as Route 42, in Bethany in New Haven County, when her Ford truck crossed into oncoming westbound traffic crashing into Kwochka's Chevy Impala. Kwochka, 43, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
Cashmore received minor injuries. Alan Cashmore, who owned the vehicle, was also named as a defendant the suit brought by Ganim. The suit charged that Cashmore was negligent and careless in causing the accident, Ganim said.
“The motor vehicle accident and the collision were caused as a result of the recklessness of the Defendant, Amanda Cashmore, and that recklessness was a substantial factor in causing the accident, injuries, and damages,” the lawsuit claimed. “The Defendant, Amanda Cashmore, operated her motor vehicle with reckless disregard for the health, safety and well being of the Plaintiff and others on the road.”
Kwochka, who was born in Bridgeport, had been a Shelton resident for more than 30 years. An avid writer, he had a novel published, "Sacrifice Your Love," in 2010 and was working on his second at the time of his death, Ganim said.
He graduated from Emmett O'Brien Technical School and attended The Baran Institute of Technology. He was employed by Business Electronics of Wallingford.
In addition to his wife Jill, Kwochka is survived by a daughter and his parents.
